Our environment consists of much more than the walls that surround us at work or home. It is the air we breathe, the water we consume, and the soil beneath our feet–all of which can help us live healthier lives if they are taken care of and maintained. In fact, the Healthy People 2020 Environmental Health objectives defined the following as related to environmental health:

  1. Outdoor air quality

  2. Surface and groundwater quality

  3. Toxic substances and hazardous wastes

  4. Homes/communities

  5. Infrastructure and surveillance

  6. Global environmental health

Maintaining environmental health is directly related to maintaining personal health as “humans interact with the environment constantly." An individual doing everything in his or her power to interact positively with the above objectives in a way gives the environment an immune boost. Check out the graphic here to see how a healthier environment can be achieved by beginning inside your home.
